Credit Recovery at Dunbar

Students who fail any semester of a course must make up that credit if it is required for graduation.  There are several options for recovering credits, which are listed below with a description of each method.  The damage of the “F” in the student’s GPA is completely removed only if the student repeats the same phase level of the course that was failed.  Typically, this means the student must repeat the same course during the regular school year.  Otherwise, the recovered credit will be an additional course with a new grade that is calculated in the GPA, but the “F” will continue to be calculated in the GPA as well.  Because we must have a record of all courses taken and grades received no grades, including repeated “F’s”, are ever deleted from the transcript.

Credit Recovery Options:

  • Repeat the course during the regular school year.  If the exact same phase level is repeated, then the “F” from the original course is no longer calculated in the GPA.

  • Repeat the course in E-school, which is managed by MLK Academy.  This is a web-based program from Jefferson County Public Schools.  All coursework is done on the computer and students can complete this work from any computer that has internet access.  When the coursework is completed, students must report to MLK to take a final exam.  E-school will award the grade and will send that grade to PLD.  Students have one semester to complete an e-school course (semesters are the same as regular school year semester).  Each ½-credit course costs $125; however, for $250 students may complete as many courses as possible in one semester.  Reduced fees are available for students on free/reduced lunch.  To register for E-school, students must see their counselor to have the application completed.  Students and their parents are required to attend an orientation meeting scheduled by MLK.

  • Repeat the course in PLATO, a web-based program that is overseen by MLK Academy with each high school managing the program for their students.  All coursework is done on the computer and students can complete this work from any computer that has internet access.  When the coursework is completed, students must take a final exam, which will be administered in the counseling office.  MLK will award the grade based upon the coursework, unit tests, and final exam.  PLATO is free to PLD students.  To register for PLATO, students must see their counselor.

Outside Credit Information and Options

Students who wish to take additional courses or complete required courses outside of Dunbar for INITIAL CREDIT may do so as long as it is completed through an accredited institution approved by FCPS.  There are several options available for earning outside credit; however, the most common options are listed below with a description of each method.  In general, courses completed through these methods are not counted as advanced courses and will be calculated in the GPA as a general level course.

Outside Credit Options:

  • E-School: This is a web-based program from Jefferson County Public Schools, but is managed in Fayette County by the MLK Academy. Reduced fees are available to students on free/reduced lunch.  To register for E-school, students must see their counselor to have the application completed.  Students and their parents are required to attend an orientation meeting scheduled by MLK.

  • Opportunity College (BCTC): Available through the Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) Opportunity College program, this option is open for juniors and seniors wishing to take college courses and earn high school elective course credit at the same time.  Students must apply to BCTC and meet college benchmarks on the ACT to be accepted.  Tuition for the college courses is half that of normal tuition at BCTC.  Students should see their counselor for more information.

  • Visiting High School Student at UK: Available through the University of Kentucky, this option is open to juniors and seniors wishing to take college courses and earn high school elective course credit at the same time.  Students must apply to UK and meet college benchmarks on the ACT to be accepted.  Students should see their counselor for more information.
